Career Development Process
This five-step process
might also be called, “How to find work and stay employable.” Learning
the process and developing the skills used in each step will
be as important as learning more proactive, non-traditional
work search strategies and tactics. Notice that “work
search” is only one of the steps in career development.
1. Assessment:
Who am I?
Such
as Personality, Job Specific and Transferable Skills,
Interests,
Values,
Circumstances, and Life Roles
2. Exploration:
What work fits who I am?
Such
as Reading, Library Use, Internet Research, and Information
Gathering from people
3. Decision:
Which work is best for me now?
Weighting
the Pros and Cons, and Prioritization of Options
4. Action:
Which action do I take and how?
Training
and/or Work Search Activities: a new assignment with current
employer, a new employer,
or create your own work?
5. Work
Assignment: How do I monitor my success and satisfaction?
- Journaling
- Recordkeeping
- Annual Career Checkup
Time to reassess? (return to Step 1)
